The Iowa Great Lakes
It’s an easy, three-hour drive north from McMullen Ford in Council Bluffs, Iowa to arrive at the Iowa Great Lakes. The trio of Big Spirit Lake, West Okoboji Lake, and East Okoboji Lake make for a delightful weekend getaway, and offer plenty of fun swimming at beaches, boating or fishing in the water, or camping in the woods.
Dubuque
Heading east from McMullen Ford, you will arrive at Dubuque in about five hours. Dubuque is Iowa’s oldest city and is filled with historic buildings and churches, a museum dedicated to the Mississippi River, and a vibrant and active art community.
Grotto of the Redemption
A road trip to the Grotto of the Redemption is the perfect choice for fans of strange roadside attractions, fans of strange, religious homage, or fans of minerals, fossils, and gemstones. This grotto may be the largest in the world and was built by one priest in the early 20th century over a 42-year process. The Grotto of the Redemption features a man-made collection of fossils, minerals, and shells that have an estimated value of over $4 million. However, it’s the strange and stunning details of this shrine that make it work the visit.
