The 2017 Ford Super Duty is the first pick-up in the United States to use the adaptive steering system. This makes it easier to maneuver the truck in tight spaces at low speeds.
Ford’s original adaptive steering technology increases efficiency through the continual adjustment of the ratio between the front wheels and the driver’s steering input wheel. The adaptive steering wheel is contained in truck’s steering wheel. It contains a mini-computer, an electric motor, and a gear unit to amplify the steering rotation through angles. This technology means less arm twisting for the drivers.
These heavy-duty pickup trucks do everything from carrying heavy loads to cruising down highways. The steering technology helps reduce workload by tightening steering ratios in unusual situations. Ford developed this technology in collaboration with engineers from TKAG, a Germany-based automotive supplier. The system provides for 30 percent more input in steering to make it easier for the vehicle to tow, maneuver, and park depending on the speed.
