You know that feeling when you're mad and frustrated with everything, but you don't know why? Suddenly you remember that you haven't eaten anything since breakfast. After finishing a sandwich, all that irritability just melts away.

People like to call this hungry-angry combination "hangry," and many studies show that not only is it real, but low blood sugar and poor nutrition can have a host of other negative psychological effects as well.

For instance, it's a bad idea to go shopping on an empty stomach -- and not just grocery shopping, either. While you are definitely in danger of piling your cart up with ice cream and cookies when your tummy is grumbly, if you walked into an electronics store, you might just leave with a new cell phone you didn't need.

Hunger makes us impulsive and unfocused, and what we eat can make a difference, too.

A few years ago, Detroit Public Schools began an initiative to put fresh, nutritious, locally grown produce into cafeteria lunches to give students there a better chance at academic success. After all, how can you expect a child to sit still and do math problems when they are hangry?

Drew Farms is one of the vegetable suppliers in the Detroit School Garden Collaborative. According to Zaundra Wimberley, Farm and Garden Program Director for Detroit Public Schools, their entire farm fleet is made up of Ford vehicles.

"Ford and Detroit are synonymous with tough," she said. "The F-150 is a tough truck, and Detroiters are tough, resilient people."
