This summer, Ford Chip Ganassi Racing will be entering four new Ford GTs in 24 Hours of Le Mans. This will be the 84th such 24-hour endurance race, held at the Circuit de la Sarthe in Le Mans, France.

The Ford GT made its debut at Le Mans over 50 years ago.

True, its first two years, 1964 and '65 were stumbling blocks. Ford Motor Company was brand new to the contemporary racing scene. They had begun developing the GT in 1963 at the urging of CEO Henry Ford II, who wanted to publicly humiliate Enzo Ferrari for backing out of a company merger last minute.

Ford found its footing in 1966, taking first, second, and third place to break Ferrari's long winning streak and become the first American automaker to win Le Mans.

With that kind of history, this year's 24 Hours of Le Mans race holds enormous significance. Not only is the Ford GT back in production for 2016, it will be competing at the world-renowned race for the first time in nearly 50 years.
