2018 Ford Mustang vs. the Competition

Compare the 2018 Ford Mustang to its peers, the Dodge Challenger and Chevrolet Camaro, and the results are clear; the Mustang is still the best hotrod around

2018 Ford Mustang vs Chevy Camaro vs Dodge Challenger

Which muscle car is the best? It's the age-old question of American motoring, and it's one for which the answer is still the same as it has always been: the Ford Mustang. Let's look at the latest 2018 model and see why its longtime rivals, the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger, still just don't hold up.

Price

Long ago and still today, one of the primary appeals of muscle cars was their affordability. With a starting MSRP of $25,680, the Mustang has the other two beat: it's a few hundred dollars cheaper than the base Camaro, and significantly more affordable than the Challenger, which starts at $27,295.*

Even at the top end, the Mustang wins. The Shelby GT350 fastback starts at $57,240 while the Camaro ZL1 starts at $62,495 and the Challenger SRT Hellcat starts at $65,995.* And if you want the so-called "Demon," that's an additional $19,000 on top of the Hellcat.

Quality and Features

So what does all that extra money get you with the Camaro and Challenger? Apparently, not much. All three vehicles are closely matched when it comes to interior features, which include heated and cooled seats, Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ compatibility, and premium audio systems. The 2018 Ford Mustang, however, has the edge once you start to look at the materials and quality. While the Challenger's interior is well designed, it doesn't have the fit-and-finish of the Mustang; and while the Camaro is well assembled, the quality of the materials themselves are a step below. Only the Mustang ticks all the boxes with an interior that is comfortable, spacious, and feels upscale.

Performance

The 2018 Dodge Challenger puts power before everything else, even at the cost of sensibility. While its ultra-expensive models slightly lead the Mustang and Camaro in a straight line, it falls far behind as soon as turning the steering wheel is required. Both the Mustang and Camaro are remarkably nimble, and both offer magnetic-damping suspension and Brembo® brakes. But the Mustang once again stands out thanks to its excellent 2.3-liter EcoBoost® engine, which uses turbocharging technology to deliver incredible response and the best efficiency of the three.

There are a ton of other ways that the Mustang pulls ahead of the Challenger and Camaro-not the least of which being the way it looks and the way you feel at the steering wheel. To see for yourself why the Mustang is the superior choice for slaking your pony car passion, stop into McMullen Ford for a test drive.
