Dare to Compare: F-150 vs. the Competition

F-150 vs. the Competition

The "big three" of the truck world are the Ford F-150, RAM 1500, and Chevrolet Silverado 1500, but how do these trucks stack up against each other? Luckily, we've done the homework for you.

Towing

All three pickup trucks - the F-150, Silverado 1500, and RAM 1500 - start their towing capacities around the same number, but those numbers fluctuate as you move up through different available powertrain options. The RAM 1500 tops out at 11,000 pounds, putting it in last place behind the Silverado, which can tow up to 12,000 pounds. The FordF-150, however, is the winner with a best-in-class towing capacity of up to 12,200 pounds of max towing. It also has awesome towing features like trailer backup assist and a tow/haul driving mode.

Value

The RAM 1500 is the least expensive of the group, with the Chevy Silverado 1500 being slightly costlier than the F-150. However, seated right in the middle, the Ford F-150 has comparable features to the Silverado 1500 and many more advanced tech and comforts than the RAM 1500, giving it great value that the other nameplates can't compete with.

Fuel Economy

Here, it all comes down to highway gas mileage. The RAM 1500 lags behind with 22 mpg highway. Meanwhile, the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 gets up to 24 mpg on the highway, and the Ford F-150 gets 25 mpg. Once again, the Silverado and F-150 are neck and neck, with Ford's truck coming out slightly ahead.

Cargo Volume

When it comes to how much you can store in your truck, the Silverado 1500 can fit about 61 cubic feet of cargo, while the RAM 1500 and Ford F-150 are about even at 62.3 cubic feet.

Verdict

With numbers that are comparable to the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 while also having better towing and value, the 2017 Ford F-150 is the clear choice for the winning spot. Come check it out today at McMullen Ford.
